HAC Big Fix

Deadline to apply to be a recipient, June 1.
LOCATION: Harwich
The idea of the Big Fix is to help people most in need do the basic maintenance on their home that they can't do themselves and don't have the income to keep up themselves. Homeowners must fall into at least one of three categories: veteran, disabled or seniors. Those interested in applying can do so online at www.haconcapecod.org. Hard copies of the application are at the Brooks Free Library at 793 Main Street; the Harwich Community Center at 100 Oak Street; the Harwich Chamber of Commerce at 1 School House Road; Hands of Hope Outreach at 49 Route 28; the Family Pantry of Cape Cod at 133 Queen Anne Road; and HAC's office at 460 West Main Street, Hyannis. HAC is looking for volunteers who are interested in forming a fundraising team and/or donating their time, skills and efforts to the day of service. Addiction in older adults is one of America's fastest growing health issues. Today, 2.5 million older adults have an alcohol or drug problem. Widowers over the age of 75 have the highest rate of alcoholism in the U.S., and older adults are hospitalized as often for alcohol-related problems as they are for heart attacks. Nevertheless, addiction in older adults can be difficult to detect, as warning signs mimic insomnia, forgetfulness and other common age-related health issues.

A visit to Cape Cod National Seashore isn't complete until you've visited the historic Highland Light in North Truro. The 69-step climb up a narrow staircase rewards visitors with spectacular views of Cape Cod and beyond. On a clear day views extend more than 20 miles across the Atlantic Ocean and bay of Cape Cod. To ensure the safety of all visitors, the minimum height requirement to climb the lighthouse is 48". Operated by Eastern National. $6 for adults, $5 for students and seniors. Must be 48" tall to climb lighthouse.

Learn to Cope is a non-profit support network that offers education, resources, peer support and hope for parents and family members coping with a loved one addicted to opiates or other drugs. Celebrates the significant role the Kennedy¹s played in shaping the history of Hyannis and Cape Cod. The 1.6 mile trail consists of 10 informational signs that are placed at key locations from Main Street to the harbor, finishing up at the JFK Memorial at Veteran¹s Beach Each stop provides a brief history of the site and its significance to the Kennedy¹s and their life on Cape Cod. Visitors along the trail can retrieve additional information by accessing the QR code or dialing the number on each sign. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands is the only one-to-one youth mentoring organization serving the Cape & Islands. Research shows that a match of just one year helps kids stay in school, avoid violent and risky behavior, and gain confidence.
